What is Pelvic Health Physiotherapy?

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of the muscles of the pelvic floor.  Everyone has the ability to benefit from seeing a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist (because EVERYONE has a pelvic floor). A Pelvic Health Physiotherapist is someone with further training in specifically the muscles and function of the pelvic floor. They use different techniques to help improve pelvic floor function. This is achieved through:

  • Exercise
  • Education
  • External AND Internal Hands on Therapy
  • Lifestyle Modification

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy is so much more than just Kegels. A good pelvic floor physiotherapist will help customize a treatment plan that helps their clients achieve their individual goals.

*Side Note*

At this time, Stephanie will only be treating Pelvic Health Patients with female genitalia, and over the age of 18 unless we have had very specific conversations with their legal guardians.

When should you see a pelvic health physiotherapist?

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy can help address many different issues:

  • Incontinence - frequency AND occurrence (hint: it’s not normal to get up in the middle of the night to pee).
  • Pregnancy Related Issues - preparing for birth and the aftermath (hint: although it is common, it is not normal to have incontinence issues AFTER having a baby).
  • Pelvic and Abdominal Pain - when it’s more than just an upset tummy.
  • Persistent Low Back and Hip Pain - sometimes when conventional physiotherapy just isn’t helping, it could be an underlying pelvic floor issue.
  • Sexual Health - When sex just doesn’t feel as good as it should. A healthy pelvic floor is a sexy pelvic floor!

What will happen during a visit to my Pelvic Health Physiotherapist?

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy - Elite Training Facility

During the initial assessment, your Pelvic Health Physiotherapist will ask you several questions about what brings you in. No answer is too much, and nothing is embarrassing. The more they know, the more they will be able to help you. These questions are usually related to pain, incontinence issues, past (or current) pregnancies, sexual history and any previous injuries to any other part of the body. They will also establish any goals you have for coming to physiotherapy. Then there is a physical exam that will involve an external and internal exam. Don’t worry, as weird as it sounds, they’re much easier than any PAP test out there.

Once your Pelvic Health Physiotherapist is done with the assessment, they will develop a treatment plan for you. This will involve a home exercise program, education and any other treatments that they deem appropriate. Their ultimate goal is helping you achieve yours.
